The 2024+ industrial deal. Strategic pathways to modernise the Polish industry

While industrial emissions reduction is a key focus in Europe’s competitiveness discussions, it is notably absent from Poland’s. This is significant given that industry accounts for 23% of Poland’s GDP, employs one in five workers, and generates a quarter of the country’s emissions and energy consumption.

Forum Energii’s reports provide essential insights into Poland’s industrial landscape and available decarbonisation technologies:

These impactful reports, now available in English, have resonated strongly with the Polish industrial sector.

Based on this data, Forum Energii highlights the sectors with the greatest near-term emissions reduction potential, including food processing, chemicals, and basic metal production. These sectors are the recommended starting points due to several factors:

  • High use of low-temperature heat: This is ideal for electrification using commercially available heat pumps. The paper and wood industries also benefit from this potential.
  • Significant savings potential: High CO2 emissions and energy use in these sectors provide strong opportunities for emission reductions and cost savings.
  • Dependence on natural gas: With 83% of natural gas being imported, reliance on this fuel poses geopolitical and cost risks. In the chemical sector, green hydrogen production via electrolysis offers an alternative.
  • Socio-economic importance: High employment and GDP contributions justify a priority approach to the transformation of these sectors, minimising social and economic impacts.

Industrial transformation is a complex process that requires strategic planning, supportive regulations, and financial backing. This involves not only new technologies but also improvements in energy efficiency, circular economy practices, and workforce reskilling. Forum Energii’s team emphasises that developing a targeted industrial strategy will need to consider the unique characteristics of Polish industry and its links with other sectors.

Forum Energii invites representatives from the industrial sector to join this process, contributing practical knowledge of industry processes and technological pathways to decarbonisation. As a starting point, Forum Energii proposes a dual approach:

  • Decarbonising current production: through electrification, increased renewable energy integration, available low-emission technologies (e.g., heat pumps, electrolysers), energy efficiency improvements, and adjustments to technological processes.
  • Developing clean technology industries: by fostering innovation, scaling production, and stimulating demand for low-emission solutions.

In collaboration with industry professionals, experts, and government bodies, Forum Energii’s ambition is to craft a robust decarbonisation strategy for Polish industry, focusing on modernisation and maintaining global competitiveness. The success of this transformation, along with new job creation in stable, energy-efficient sectors and continued economic growth for Poland, will depend on coordinated efforts and a strong public-private partnership.
