Webinar | “Energy Transition in Poland: Yearbook 2026" webinar on the state of the Polish energy transition – based on data from Forum Energii report

The fuel crisis, this time linked to the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East and disruptions to oil and gas supplies, has once again highlighted the importance of diversifying energy sources and reducing dependence on imports. Today, energy security, national security and economic competitiveness can be considered synonymous.

The energy transition in Poland is progressing despite constant delays in adopting sectoral strategies. The importance of renewable energy sources is growing year on year. In June 2025, for the first time, energy production from renewables exceeded that from coal, and over half of the capacity in the system comes from renewable sources. For another year running, Poland is reducing the carbon intensity of its energy production whilst simultaneously increasing GDP. At the same time, the capacity factor of coal-fired units is reaching its lowest levels in decades, confirming a lasting shift in the structure of the national energy mix.

The transition is also gathering pace in terms of new technologies and end users. By 2025, the capacity of prosumer energy storage systems had doubled, and the electric vehicle market was growing rapidly. Although the pace is slower than a few years ago, the capacity of prosumer PV and heat pump installations continues to grow. Since the previous energy crisis, it has been clear that citizens are taking matters into their own hands, becoming one of the main drivers of the transition.

However, ongoing modernisation does not mean a complete end to dependence on fossil fuels. Over the past year, the importance of natural gas in the electricity and heating sectors has increased. As a result import and consumption levels of this fuel remain high. The growing role of natural gas in these sectors points to the need to develop a long-term strategy for this fuel and to define its role in industry and households as well.

The rapid growth of renewable energy sources, which is significantly faster in the case of solar power than wind power, is also revealing growing systemic challenges. In 2025, the scale of non-market redispatching (curtailment) more than doubled compared to the previous year, and the operator’s forecasts indicate that this phenomenon will intensify further in 2026. This shows that the pace of renewable sources development is increasingly outpacing the development of the electricity system’s flexibility.

In the latest edition of the Forum Energii Yearbook, we present data summarising the past year across four areas, namely:

  • Energy in Poland,
  • National Power System,
  • Energy raw materials,
  • Impact on climate and emissions.
